A brand-new state-of-the art operating theatre hub has opened at Solihull Hospital which will enable thousands more procedures to be carried out for local patients, every year.
The hub is a £45m investment in the Solihull Hospital site, housing six brand new operating theatres. It will provide treatment for patients waiting for a range of operations including cancer, joint replacement, upper and lower gastrointestinal, urology, breast, and plastic surgeries. Many of the procedures will be performed using two trailblazing robots, enabling minimally invasive surgery to aid recovery.
The new facility will contribute to bringing down waiting lists and providing much-needed surgery for patients waiting for treatment. The hub, as well as a new ophthalmology treatment suite, will provide over 11,500 additional procedures every year. Over 230 members of staff have been recruited to ensure the hub is a success.
Deputy Leader and Shirley East Ward Councillor Karen Grinsell said; "I was really pleased to hear that a Shirley resident was one of the first patients to be treated at the new hub. Many doubted the future of the hospital but we have worked hard with our Health partners, University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) to ensure its future viability."
