Julian Knight, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Solihull, has joined local campaigners to object to current plans to build 200 homes on Aqueduct Road, Shirley.
Julian is very concerned over potential traffic congestion, the decision to place the homes in an area which has been flooded in the recent past and harm to local wildlife.
He said: This development will mean an extra 400 cars minimum yet we have only one road in and one out. The roads around are already subject to heavy congestion and this will make matters even worse. And, what about access for emergency services? developers have not given enough thought to this?"
Julian has been a longstanding campaigner against building homes in flood plains, having written several newspaper articles on the subject in the past: "Local residents tell me that the flooding is so bad that they find it difficult to get insurance cover at present, now a big developer wants to place a couple of hundred extra houses in such a location."
"Whilst I appreciate the need for more homes in Solihull, local people have clear concerns and I call on the developers to listen to this and amend their plans accordingly".
There is also local wildlife on the land earmarked for development including badger sets and retired horses.
Julian met with members of local group SPLAT (Shirley Peoples' Local Action Team) led by local resident Paul Chambers to hear their concerns and formulate a strategy.
