At a packed public meeting on 27th June, organised by Meriden MP, Caroline Spelman, Civil Aviation Authority representatives answered a range of questions from residents and Councillors from Barston, Hampton-in-Arden and Balsall Common on the airport's airspace change consultation, which many in these communities believe is flawed.
Surprise was expressed by the CAA that information on 'obstacles' which the airport company say exist and which is one of the reasons they have given for not keeping the Hampton Turn, had not been given to the community.
Parish Councillor and local campaigner, Alison Rolf, told the CAA that the major concern for the communities affected was the refusal by the airport company to hold a further consultation on a community developed proposal known as option 6a, which retains the majority of the current Hampton Turn. The CAA said they were aware of this and when the airport submits its preferred option these concerns would be taken into account.
Meriden Ward Councillor, Tony Dicicco made the point that the airport's actions had split communities and that a way forward needed to be found by working together.
Caroline Spelman said: “I am grateful to the CAA for accepting my offer to come and explain modern air safety rules. They shed light on a confusing situation making it clear they will look at any option including no change to the flight path as long as it is safe."
Caroline Spelman is due to hold a further meeting to see how we continue our fight to make the airport change its mind.
